The Shenanigans - Sunday January 19th 2024

M had had a pain behind her right eye and on Monday morning it was bloodshot so she phoned the doctors. They said she should go to the emergency eye clinic so I took her in. We were anticipating a long wait but she was seen quite quickly and it turned out to be conjunctivitis. I was feeling a bit rough too and thought it was a bit of a hangover but it got worse as the day went and I had a runny bottom. Figured it was a bug and didn't eat anything all day and had an early night. Felt a bit better on Tuesday morning and managed a couple of slices of toast then some spag bol for tea. As result I decided to go to the Viv and Riley gig at the Jericho in Oxford I had a ticket for. 4 hand pumps but none serving beer unfortunately. Last time I was there I recalled the beer being pretty good. Support act was  chap called Jack performing as My Crooked Teeth. Singer songwriter, OK but a bit like a singer songwriter. Viv and Riley were excellent. She sang with one of those gorgeous country voices and played guitar. He accompanied on either guitar or fiddle and backing vocals. It all sound effortless. Great stuff. Their instruments were ampliflied with attached mics as opposed to pickups. They only arrived today. At one point he tuned her bottom E whilst she was playing. Never seen that before. Went swimming on Wednesday morning. M had a follow up appointment about her eye in a clinic in Green Park. I went for walk whilst waiting for her and spotted this by the Mad Stad. Solar panels in the hotel car park. Great idea. Had a meeting in the Castle Tap in the evening with Tony, Andy and Duncan to discuss forming a band to play at the White Knights Arts trail. Meanwhile Edith took her first steps.  On Thursday I did my ridr out to
Playhatch  up the hill to Dunsden and back through Caversham. There was a bit of flooding at the start of the path from the Oracle business park and some of the empty buildings now have their windows covered with what looks like metal sheeting. It makes them look a bit eerie and gives a feeling of more permanent closure. First Thursday drinks in The Fox n Hounds in the evening. Its always really atmospheric cycling back over the river at night.
It was the annual shenanigans on Friday. We met up in a pub called The Coal Hole on The Strand for lunch then did a hidden London tour of bits of the tube near Charring Cross. The first bit was a disused bit of the Jubilee Line that is quite often for film locations. They also occasionally park trains there during busy  periods. There second one was a construction tunnel they used to get the debris out. This goes under Trafalgar Square and has to bend roud the foundations of Nelson's Column. The last but was a ventilation shaft over the Northern line platforms. You could see the trains from above. All very interesting and we then had tea in the Clermont Hotel.Finished off with a swifty in the Chandros. Went to watch URZ URZ lose to Stockport on Saturday with Ralph. Hadn't realised he'd been ill over Christmas. He ended up in AnE on Christmas day. JAMO came round for tea on Sunday.
