Toronto and Niagara - Friday June 26th 2026

James took us to Heathrow on Saturday. You check your own bags in these days. Plane left on time, no problems.
Warren was tracking us on Flight Aware and saw we were flying over Reading so contacted Amy and she took a photo.
I'd booked extra roomy seats. They had no seats in front so I started to think maybe that was a mistake as no table or screen...but they fold out from your seat.
They asked us to put the blinds down for most of the flight so people could sleep. This was our first view of Canada. Just coming up for sunset.
We landed a bit early but had to wait ages for our bags. It was probably about 9:45 local time and dark when we finally got out and were met by Warren and Mary Ellen. They had a world cup photo machine at the airport.
It was incredibly busy on the drive back to their place down the 8 lane (on each side) 401.
Woke to a lovely morning.
Did a walk with Mary Ellen on Sunday morning around where they live, Warren was playing pickle ball. Took in Amy's primary school and high school her and Warren attended. Went to an area called Bayview with a great selection of shops and restaurants. Love the traffic lights. You get a green man when its time to cross followed by a flashing hand and a count down. Warren cooked corn on the cob and beef kebabs on the bbq for lunch. In the afternoon we did most of Warren and Mary Ellen's regular walk through a park. Saw black, grey and red squirrels running along the telephone cable across the end on their garden. Then male and female cardinal birds and a rabbit. Had hot dogs for tea. Had an early night as feeling a bit jet lagged.
On Monday we all went into downtown Toronto on the subway. We started off in Kensington Market which us not actually a market but an eclectic selection if shops and restaurants...including cannabis shops.

Then we headed down to the CN Tower for lunch.
Great views, that's the football stadium on the right. Great food too, had mussels and puckered which is pike. Found the fan zone in Nathan Phillips Square and saw Messi score.Sat out in the garden for cheese and biscuits when we got back and saw a possum and  family of raccoons. This was the last of the young ones.At some point we also went to the local LCBO for supplies.
On Tuesday we headed into town by ourselves. Spent ages in the museum. They had great early nations and dinosaur sections.Had lunch there that featured an impressive corned beef sandwich.
Then found a pub called the Duke of York to watch a dull England draw with Ghana. 0 0. Large sections were reserved so we assumed that was for the came but nobody seemed interested so it all made for a bit of a flat atmosphere. We then headed for The Horseshoe Tavern to see some music. Once we found the venue we looked around for somewhere to eat and found an Iraqi place. When we came out we heard music playing from a bar opposite so went in there instead. It was free, cash only and we only caught the last couple of numbers but it still counts as a gig.On Wednesday we set off at 5 45 am to beat the rush hour and drive to Kat and Ross's who live near Niagara. They live in great detached house backing onto woodland.Although there's a fence their extends much further back. Emma and Poppy were pleased to see us.
There are lots of vineyards in the area and we drive out to one called Gallery 13 for a bit of a tasting. There was also some interesting art work there and a bakery selling butter tarts. After that we drove to a brewery called Bench for lunch. Warren and Mary Ellen then drove us Niagara On The Lake for look round then on to our hotel in Niagara. We paid for an upgrade and got a room with a balcony over looking the falls and the Rainbow Bridge over to the USA.We went in search of an LCBO and found ourselves on tge incredibly tacky Clifton Hill but picture doesn't capture it.As we had a great view we decided to chill for the evening and watched Scotland lose 3 0 to Brazil. There were lights.....
....and fireworks at 10.
Had a swim and a hearty breakfast on Thursday. It was raining so we got the WEGO bus to the Butterfly Conservatory.
Warren and Mary Ellen then picked us up from the hotel to drive us back. I'm the evening we went to the Little Sisters Indonesian restaurant in Midtown which was my birthday present from James and Amy. Great food. On Friday me, M and Warren went to see Senegal v Iraq. Great atmosphere. Unsegregated crowd all getting on. The Iraqis were very noisy. Unfortunately they conceded quire early on and then had a man sent off so list 5 0. Things to note, they watered the pitch during the hydration break and there's a countdown for whe. It ends. As it was the last group game the other game was being played at the same time so they gave the score and showed the goals. The stand we were in was temporary and had a great view. The music was very loud. It was very well organised. As it was 5 0 we left on 90 mins to beat the crowd. On the way back we met Mary Ellen for chicken wings at Duffs, one of Amy's favourites.

Getting Ready For Canada - Friday June 19th 2026

Canada planning on Monday and the flyers and posters arrived for HCTS so did a bit of delivery. Same on Tuesday.
Finished off the delivery on Wednesday. Watched England beat Croatia 4 2 in their opening game of the World Cup. Good game, especially the second half.
On Thursday we hired an automatic car for the day to try one out as that's what we'll be hiring in Canada. All fine once I figured out how everything works and that you don't use your left foot for braking. Decided it would be best to get International Driving Permits so got mine from the Broad St Mall post office. Stayed up to watch Canada beat Qatar 6 0. Started packing on Friday. M got her IDP.

A Trip To Perth - Sunday June 14th 2026

Got the train up to Perth on Monday. Good journey but took about 8 hours changing at York. No taxis when we git there so James picked us up. Had takeaway pizza. Explored Perth a bit on Tuesday with James and the kids. Amy was working. Nice place. There are 2 road bridges over the Tay, the west and the south, and also a railway bridge with a footpath. They live on the east side of the river where the green dot is.  Me and M went out in the evening. Had a good pint of Bitter and Twisted in The Old Ship Inn followed by an excellent. Greek meal at the Aphrodite restaurant. It didn't get dark until well after 10 pm.On Wednesday we took the kids to a small playground at the bottom of the hill. Then walked into town and found another playground in Nortth Inch park. There's also a South Inch. We had over stretched ourselves a bit so James picked M and the kids up outside what will be Owen's nursery. I walked back.
After a bit of down time we walked to Millenium Park with James and the kids. We all then went out for excellent meal at Cardo. Got the train back on Thursday. The train jourbeys were pretty good and easy with just one change at York. They both took around 8 hrs but its getting on for 450 miles so not bad. The  MnS in the station has closed for some reason so we went to the main one for an Indian meal for 2. I started to watch the opening world cup game between Mexico and South Africa but got bored at half time. Mexico won 2 0. Ordered flyers and posters for HCTS. On Friday we completed the line up fir HCTS and got posts on WeGotTickets, What's On Reading and the RSAC website. JAMO drove back from Perth just in time to watch Canada v Bosnia. Great game, Bosnia scored first but Canada equalised late on for their first ever world cup point. We all went to Greenwich Park on Saturday for Edith's 3rd birthday party.  A great little event with lots if her friends from nursery. I never tire of the view from there.
Had a call with Warren and Mary Ellen on Sunday to discuss the Canada trip. JAMO went to the London brewery with Josh and Vic and kids. Got HCTS posts on RGMusicSpotlight and RSAC"s Instagram and Facebook pages. Sent a publicity pack to all the acts.

The Passing Of Martin King - Sunday June 7th 2026

Quiet day on Monday. Did some Canada and HCTS prep. Took Madeline and Owen down to the little park in Coley late afternoon. On Tuesday morning I got an email from Liz King, Martin's daughter, informing us that he had passed away on Sunday morning. He had a pulmonary embolism in Feb 2020. I was contacted on 25th by a paramedic who found my number on his phone and had given him CPR. The first time he was out for 3 mins and the second 60. He had been in a coma ever since. I think it happened the night before on 24th. Martin was the best man at our wedding and one of my best friends since secondary school.

He was also in Roy and the Rogers with me and my other mates from Goole.

Tony came round in the afternoon to practice our acoustic set for the street party.
A while back we got a letter from Thames Water saying  since we had our water meter fitted they suspected we had a leak and were losing 15 litres of water an hour and it had to be fixed. On Wednesday some chaps came from Thames Water, I thought to identify where the leaks were but it was only whether the leaks were nside the building or not. They said they were inside and we were losing 150 litres an hour  We had iidentified 2 small leaks in the downnsairs loo. One in the loo itself and a leaking tap but that would not account for that much leakage so called out a leak detection expert. He did pressure tests on the rising main circuit and between the meter and rising main and could not identify a leak except for those mentioned. It then occurred to me I could do a test myself as the meter is readily accessible. This showed we had used 9 litres in 12 mjns but M had flushed the loo which is about 6 so 3, which is 15 litres an hour. So came to the conclusion we should just fix the leaks we know about. This was later confirmed by a further test where the water to the downstairs loo was switched off and the meter showed no water was used.
Went swimming on Thursday morning. Found out from Tony that the party had been moved to Sunday because of the weather. Had first Thursday drinks in the evening. Just me Russ and Dave K. JR was at the Twyford beer festival. Wynn's glasses have definitely caught on.

A good start to the day on Friday, we had a good lie in as James took the kids out. Went to RSAC about midday to set up the PA for the evening event. Had a rehearsal at Pirate in the evening. JAMO drove up to Perth on Saturday.

I went into RSAC in the afternoon to set up for Howling at the Moon. On Sunday morning went back to RASC to pack down and borrow some speakers for Steve and Yvonne's party. Went over there about 10 30 to start setting up. Did an acoustic set then Mark Downey did a set and we did an electric one. I had a technical issue in that my lyrics sheet was blowing in the wind so pegs had to be attached.

A good do and we were well received as usual but very tiring.

Meanwhile M lead the society walk in Oxford I had planned

and in Perth...
