Christmas - Thursday December 28th 2023

It was M's PhD viva on Monday. It was done online starting at 1pm so James and Amy took the kids out for the day so there were no distractions. She passed with minor corrections. She got quite a grilling. It lasted over 3 hours. Another doctor in the house. I'm the odd one out. We had champagne to celebrate. Found out Ian has covid. As the viva is over and done with Christmas can start so we put the decorations up on Tuesday. Meanwhile Edith enjoyed some broccoli.
They've gone to town with the decorations across the road.
Had a busy day on Wednesday. Went into town with M and Owen for a food shop and spent the afternoon cooking in preparation for SET's visit tomorrow. I'd had a bit of a sore throat on Tuesday night and when I woke up but it went away and I felt fine during the day. I started to feel a bit shivery later  thought so I'd better do a covid test as we were due to meet up with lots of people over Xmas.A bit of a blow. We were due to go to Brendan and Lynda's in the evening and they were still OK with that as was Kelvin. Anne and Wynn are still coming for Xmas but SET won't come tomorrow as planned. Had a good night at BnL's with Kelvin. Felt a little bit rough on Thursday morning. A combination of too much to drink and covid so had a lie in until midday. I was supposed to be cycling out to the Black Horse with various people including Andy who was getting a lift with Coxy but didn't go because of the covid. Stuart and Clare also have it so Stuart didn't go either. I started to feel a bit shivery early evening so put on an extra fleece and pair of socks and flopped in front of the telly and had an earlyish night. Felt a lot better on Friday. JAMO went to Oxford to take Madeline to the Natural History Museum. Anne and Wynn arrived on Saturday with a lot of food and drink. They are staying at Malmaison. We met up for drinks at the Botanist but it was a bit noisy so came back here. On Christmas Eve M and Anne went to a carol service whilst me and Wynn went to The Nags. We then has an excellent takeaway from the Kung Fu Kitchen before meeting a few folk down the Castle Tap.  I did a covid test during the day but I was still +ve. Anne and Wynn then came back for a few hands of cards. I think I lost them all. Got up quite early on Christmas Day so Madeline could open her presents. Then walked over to the Fox and Hounds to meet up with Tom and the Wises picking up Anne and Wynn on the way.Amy cooked exellent slow cooked short beef ribs in the evening followed by M's excellent bunt cake. We finished off with more cards. SET came over on Boxing Day which was out main present giving Xmas meal day.We had a secret santa and I got a pair of really nice glasses. M bought this as a joint present. We had pulled pork for dinner which turned out pretty good. Also excellent Xmas pud, leftover bunt cake and cheeseboard.. A good time was had by all.More cards later. Wednesday was billed as leftover pie day but there weren't really any leftovers so James and Amy popped down to Brewdog whilst we had pasta and baby sat. Anne and Wynn went home. On Thursday morning JAMO went to Dinton Pastures to meet up with some friends including PJ. We went to the Lyndhurst for our evening meal. Excellent fish and chips, nice couple of pints and relaxed atmosphere. They seemed quite happy with Madeline running around and being noisy after she'd finished. Me and James went on the bikes with Madeline in her child seat.  Meanwhile Edith provided a recital back in Greenwich.
Found out Russ has also got covid.

Busy week - Sunday December 17th 2023

On Monday M and I went up to London for the day. The plan was to just wander round the city, have lunch and take in a few pubs and churches. Found the Railway Tavern where we used to drink when I worked at Morgan Grenville but its now Green King so gave it a miss.Went past some tall buildings.

There was an organ recital going on in St Michael's church down Cornhill. We had lunch in great but weird pub in St Michaels Alley called the George and Vulture. Went over to Charing Cross and had a swifty in The Ship and Shovel before getting the Elizabeth Line home. Did a ride on Tuesday along the Loddon. The ford near The Heron was quite high. In the evening I went to watch URZ with Ralph. We drew 1 1 with Oxford. Biggish crowd and good atmosphere early on.M and Amy went up to Oxford on  Wednesday. Had a short ride down the Kennet on Thursday. They've opened up the footpath where Homebase was.

Had my Xmas haircut. Owen can nealy roll over. Had first Thursday drinks in the evening which was a pub crawl. Ale House, Allied, Blue Collar, Greyfriars, 3 Guineas. There must have some Oxford Utd fans in the last one on Tuesday night.
Went to get the Christmas tree on Friday. James and Amy took Madeline to softplay and to the nursery Christmas party. Did the sound at RSAC for Grant Sharkey in the evening. He was very good but unfortunately there were only 3 paying punters. He was supported by Damien Passmore (DAP) who was also very good. He stood in at very short notice as the original support act was ill. A lazy day on Saturday. James and Amy got the memorandum of sale through for their house. On Sunday I did the sound at RSAC for the Sunday Alternative Christmas do. They are secular group who meet up once a month. They have a band that they sing along to. Got there at 11 to set up then left them to practice. Popped into Blue Collar with James and Amy and the kids as there was a street food festival going on and DAP was also playing. Then went back to RSAC for the Sunday Alternative main event. They played games as well as singing along. Some quite ambitious songs including Bohemian Rhapsody.

Howling At The Moon - Sunday December 10th 2023

Had a fairly quiet day on Monday. Went to the park with James and Madeline. Took Owen into town on Tuesday morning and did my 5 hills ride in the afternoon. Quite a bit of flooding out that way so I got wet feet.
Another quiet day on Wednesday. Took Owen for a walk to the RISE Bakehouse and bought donuts and a loaf. Very nice but expensive. M went to see Anatomy Of A Fall at the Biscuit Factory with Mandy followed by a meal at Bills. URZ beat Charlton on penalties to get through to the next round of the EFL Trophy. M woke up with a bit of a cold on Thursday and we were thinking our proposed trip to Brian and Karen's was possibly going to have to be cancelled as a result. As it turned out they cancelled as Karen was ill. A bit of a shitty day but still took Owen out for a short walk to the chemist's for paracetamol. Went to the hygenist on Friday morning. Did a ride out to Sonning and Sonning Common in the afternoon. Popped in at the Nags for a sneaky one. On Saturday I was helping out at RSAC doing the sound for Howling At The Moon, and LGBTQ+ cabaret. They wanted to decorate the place and do soundchecks thoughout the day so I went in to set up at 11am. Graham came about 1 30 so I left to get some lunch and go to watch URZ vs Barnsley. We went 1 0 up early on and our attacking place was quite good apart from that final ball. Ended up losing 3 1. Went back to RSAC after to finish setting up and do the show. It was a bit mixed but really liked Sammy Trotman (comedian), Anna Lewis (singer songwriter) and Frankie Heartless (violinist). In the meantime JAMO went up to London and met up with SET and some other friends. Went with James on Sunday morning to pick up a cot bed they got for a fiver and to get some things from Lok n Store.

Open Mic At The Castle Tap - Sunday December 3rd 2023

Tony came round for another practice on Monday and we played at the open mic night at the Castle Tap in the evening as the Dead Sea Trio. We played Little Red rooster and Walking Blues. All went well so we also played Cracking Up and To The Brink. There weren't many there, 16 at most. A mixture of music and spoken word. The guy doing sound was blind and also played keyboard/guitar with harmonica. Very good. Took owen out for a couple of walks on Tuesday. Went to see URZ with Ralph in the evening. Amazingly they beat Carlisle 5 1. Didn't do much on Wednesday or Thursday apart from taking Owen out.The health visitor came round on Friday to see Madeline and Owen. All fine. I went for a ride down the Kennet. It was a bit cold.
James and Amy had put an offer in on a house earlier in the week, 104 Waverley Rd, a nice looking semi, and after a few ups and downs the chain was finally closed. So all being well its all going ahead. Josh, Vicki and Isla came round on Saturday evening as we were going round to Rob and Ange's. Great night and their house in Wales is going ahead. We arranged the society walk on Sunday based round The George and Dragon at Swallowfield. I didn't stay for the meal as I came back to watch URZ on the telly playing Eastleigh in the cup. I was optimistic after 2 league wins and our good form in the cup but it was a dire performance and we lost 2 1. A bit of a lazy day on Sunday. Went for a walk with James, Madeline and Owen. James made pizzas.
