Coronavirus - Sunday 27th December

The ridiculously over ordered shop arrived.Sent a box of small presents to Tom and Sally. France is not allowing anyone to enter from the UK because of the new virus strain. This includes lorry drivers so Kent is now full of lorries. Other countries have done the same. This will inevitably lead to panic buying. Kelvin had suggested a ride with me and Andy on Tuesday but under the new restictions only 2 people can exercise together so I dipped out. Went for a ride first thing anyway. Went out along the new cycle path to the uni and then carried on down Shinfield Rd, round to Sindlesham then along the Loddon and back down the A4. Went passed URZ traing ground, I'm not sure if it will just be the 1st team trainng at the moment and maybe the women. The ford at what used to be the Lands End was quite high.
We had a zoom with James and Amy in the afternoon. It was mainly M and James baking mince pies and sausage rolls. Yum.Has a zoom with TnS, JnA and Warren and Mary-Ellen. We had all received a mysterious package and it turned out to be the same jigsaw that we can all do over Xmas. They are in a similar lockdown situation to us in Toronto. Then had a gigs n ale zoom after. Tony had been round to Kevin's about some work and they had made the connection. Penno is having Sarah over on Xmas day. I think Xmas really has started now. Tried to take a screen shot but couldn't for some reason so took a photo which didn't come out very well but this one did from Penno.
The new set of shelves arrived for the utility room on Wednesday. We had assumed they woukd be the same size as the existing ones but they were longer.and wouldn't fit. So had to swap with the existing ones which was a bit of a faff. Suddendly the day had gone. Had a Kelly family zoom in the evening. There were a lot on Michael and Ann, Anne and Wynn, Chris and Jonna from Sweeden, Andy and Emily from Bristol, James and Amy, Tom and Sally, Richard and his family, the Caterham Kellys and us. Phil did a quiz that we won then M organised a game of charades won by the Caterham Kellys. On Thursday M went for a run and I went for a ride first thing, a northern loop. It was sunny but cold. Saw my first fieldfares of the winter. The well at Kidmore End looked quite festive. When I got back the Skoggins' had put up.a fine wreath.Made a start on the jigsaw.

Went out in the street at 6pm for socially distanced drinks. Made pizzas, played online crib with James followed by 6 nimmt with James and Tom. TnS were also doing their jigsaw.
We had zoom present opening on Christmas day. JnA bought me a coffee grinder and TnS a reverb unit. M got be this.We all clubbed together to get M this.
Had really nice dinner of pulled pork then another call in the evening. Both Sally's sisters are having to self isolate. Anna because of the NHS app and Izzy because her boyfriend has tested positive. Had a lazy day on Boxing Day. Didn't get up til about 1pm. Watched URZ beat Luton 2 1. Did the Ottolengi chick pea thing with the left over pork. Very tasty. Did an only connect quiz in the evening with TnS and JnA. They have both finished their jigsaws as have Warren, Mary-Ellen and Kat so just us left. Went for a stroll round Prospect Park first thing Sunday. It was a lovely morning a pity inconsiderate people have dumped a load of rubbish round the bottle bank.Came back had breakfast and finished off the jigsaw. We had a spare piece as did JnA. M did homemade ravioli, very tasty. We watched Mulholland Drive, very confusing. Heard an owl when I went to bed.

Coronavirus - Sunday 20th December

Started work on decorating the downstairs toilet/shower room. Went for a swim at lunchtime. All of London and some out lying authorities are being put into tier 3 as cases are rapidly increasing. The government are suggesting this could be due to a new strain of the virus. Its not meant to be any more harmful and should still be zapped by the vaccine. Some authorities like Greenwich are closing schools early for Christmas but the government are saying they should stay open. Went to buy a Christmas tree from BnQ. They are reduced already. Did most of the painting in the toilet. Finushed off Troubled Blood on Wednesday morning, thought it was pretty good. It came in for a bit of stick as JK made some comments that the trans gender community found offensive and one of the characters in the book sometimes dresses as a woman in order to kidnap other women. I cant see that the 2 things are related though. Spent the day finishing off the toilet and doing the weekly clean. Pretty horrible day weather wise. Watched URZ v Norwich on Sky, we lost 2 1. Norwich deserved it I think. We gifted them the first goal, equalised with a deflected shot then they got a dodgy pen. Joined the goolie zoom at half time. Roy had also joined he was watching Rangers. Got up early on Thursday to get the Christmas decorations out of the loft and put the tree up before I went on a ride with Andy. We got a train to Cholsey and did a loop through Ewelme, Cookley Green, Stonor and Henley. It was a lovely sunny day. Stopped of at the weir bear Benson LockDidn't realise there used to be watercress beds in Ewelme. They now have a massive outdoor area at the Bottle and Glass including a barn.Unfortunately the chap who got out of the car you can see told us Reading has been moved to tier 3. We were kind of expecting it as cases have been going up. When I got back M had decorated the Christmas tree.I went out to post James and Amy's presents. When I got back M had put out the snowmen in the kitchen so it's officially Christmas.Had a zoom briefing about the next phase of the Slow Ways project. In the evening I watched a Courtney Barnett live stream from the Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne. Great concert in an impressive setting.
On Friday we had Paul, Carolyn, Tony and Sue over for socially distanced drinks in the garden. If had originally been planned for Saturday but that's when we move into tier 3 and such gatherings are not allowed so we pulled it back a day. Carolyn thinks she's had covid although she tested negative. Thinks she caught it at the opticians. Tony and Sue are being tested weekly as part of an ONS survey. The mulled wine, sausage rolls and mince pies were well recieved. Meant to take a photo but forgot. On Saturday I got a couple phone calls from an unknown number that I didn't answer but a message was left on the second. I was my cousin Phillip telling me his mum, my aunty Phil had passed away. She was 92, the last of her siblings and last one of my mum's and her siblings and partners. She had dementia and was in a care home. She also broke her hip a few weeks ago. Philllip has only been able to 'visit' through the care home window. She died in her sleep. Watched URZ on iFollow they were 3 0 down at half time but did pull one back in the second half. At 4 Boris announced that tier 3 areas in London and the South East will be moved to tier 4. No household mixing, all but essential things closed. This will also apply over Christmas to those areas. Elsewhere the Christmas easing has been reduced to just Christmas day. This is mainly down to the new faster spreading variant of the virus. This means Tom and Sally cant come. They'll be stuck in Greenwich without any presents as they are all here. We spoke to them and also James and Amy as Christmas in Scotland has also been reduced to one day. Sally in particular was understandably very upset. I contacted Ocado to see if we can change our massive shop due to arrive on Monday. A good start to the day on Sunday. Finished the Everyman crossword. Then heard from Ocado we cant change our shop. Decided to walk into town to get a sympathy card for Phil. Bumped into Sarah down the street who told us the gory details of their burglary. Her son and his friend were held at knife point. She was similarly threatened with a screw driver and Nigel was hit with a machete and left for dead. Sounds truly horrific. They think they were targeted but don't know why. Town was quiet considering it's the weekend before Christmas but not as quiet as the first lockdown though. MnS was open as it sells food as was WH Smiths presumably because they have a post office. Watched the TV series of Smiley's People but fell asleep during the last one.

Coronavirus - Sunday 13th December

Started glossing the utility room. M had bought Dulux One Coat paint. Excellent stuff. You have to apply it quite thick and watch out for runs and ripples but its a bit like applying a thin coat of plastic. And it does what it says. Only one coat needed. On Tuesday they started vaccinations. Some over 80s, health and care home workers get it first. Did the ride to Burghclere again with Andy and Kelvin. It was a really good ride and I had missed a second ford. It was cold so 2 pairs of socks, gloves and overshoes and thermals. The ford was similar to the other. We had lunch there which was a bit nippy. A strange smell of chutney as we cycled over Greenham Common which may have been from here. Back at Thatcham station Andy remarked on the starlings on the electricity pylon. I'd noticed them before and even taken a photo but didn't post it so here's one I took thus time but they still don't look that impressive.
We spoke to James, they have been told they will be moved from tier 4 to tier 3 but this means they will still not be able to travel outside the Christmas window so will definitely not be coming down. They have 5 tiers in Scotland, 0 to 4. We have 1 to 3. Finished off painting the utility room on Wednesday. Had a goolie chat in the evening. Greg has recorded a cool version of Walk On By, Rick has submitted his screen play, Ian was a bit knackered after a long walk, John seemed a bit worse for wear. Went for a swim on Thursday morning, forgot to take a mask but M had a spare. Put various hooks up in the utility room. Ironing board hanging behind the door, pizza paddles and most importantly some ornate cake tins. Had to go to BnQ first to buy some screws. They used to have a really good system where you could select loose screws and put them in a plastic bag and they just charged by the size of the bag. They're not there now so I assume its A covid thing. Had a gigs n ale zoom in the evening. I finished off my Berkshire beer box and noticed this on a can of Phantom Brewery Golden Ticket.
So I peeled it off. I then noticed you could also peel the label off my can of Black Cat. Thus immediately made me think of a new hobby. I then noticed there was another label under the Golden Ticket one. Bizarre. On Friday I cleaned the floor in the utility room. Then went on a boot cleaning walk to Evans for some inner tubes and Sainsbury's for some wine. Quite busy in town, queue outside John Lewis. On Saturday we put lights in the garden and rearranged the patio with chairs round the fire pit so we can have people round. On Sunday Brendan, Lynda and Kelvin came round for drinks and nibbles in the garden. The weather was a bit iffy but quite mild with just a fine drizzle to start with. However it then started to rain quite heavily. We stuck it out for a while but then had to abandon a bit earlier then planned.

Coronavirus - Sunday 6th December

Finally finished Oscar and Lucinda on Monday morning. An odd book. Decided on Troubled Blood, the new Strike book from JKR. Not read one before but enjoyed on telly. Sally confirmed that they will be spending Christmas with us. They will also be bringing Poppy. They'll meet up with Keith and Fiona outdoors on Christmas day and do outdoor presents on Boxing Day. It's looking increasingly unlikely that James and Amy will make it down though. Did some more learning of songs for the get together and have arranged a Skype call with Mike on Wednesday to sort out the guitar parts. Went ford spotting on my bike near Burghclere. Got a puncture near Ikea. I didn't find the cause of last weeks puncture which is always a but worrying but it had stayed up. Couldn't find anything this time by feeling so decided to look on the inside. Spotted a tiny hole and on the outside was a tiny piece of quartz with an extrenely sharpe point. I figured that had been the cause of the last two punctures. Apart from that it was a lovely day
and a good ride out via Woolhampton and Kingsclere. Spotted a paraglider over what I later discovered was Watership Down. The ford itself was a bit of a let down though.Came back through Greenham Common and got a train from Thatcham. Took this snap on the platform. You can see the photographer reflected in the bottom, at least his legs.
I used say wallet, glasses, phone, keys to myself when I went out to remind me to take those items. I lost my wallet a couple of years ago and just used my phone cover so it kind of went out of use. I've decided to reintroduce it though as mask, glasses, phone, keys. It was announced tgat the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine has been approved in the UK. The roll out will probably start next week. On Wednesday afternoon I had the Skype call with Mike. He seems like a nice bloke, about my age and it was very productive. The lockdown has now ended so we are now in tier 2. Had a goolie chat in the evening. On Thursday decided to start repainting the utility room as the weather is mot looking too good fir the next few days. Went for a swim now lockdown has been lifted. It was a bit colder than usual. You now need to wear a mask in the sports centre except when exercising. Went to the Fox and Hounds for first Thursday drinks and a substantial meal. They only had these beers on, a lot of pubs put there beers on Untapped as its table service.Had 3 Yulus, a Lumina and fimished off with a Just Stout. Pizzas were good too but we only had small ones.
We sat in the big tent which counts as outside. Wore 2 T shirts, 2 jumpers, 2 pairs of socks, thermals and a jacket. They just had one heater. There was a bit of a delay getting in but after that it was quite well organised. They are doing 3 hour slots. We had 7 30 to 10 30. Only opening Thursday to Sunday so today was the first day they have been reopened. It was weird going out at night. Good lights from the footbridge which looks pretty good itself.
Continued with utility room on Friday. Tony came roind to plum in the tumble dryervso we dont have to empty the water tank. Made pizzas and watched telly. On Saturday I popped to BnQ to get some filler about 11. Saw some fans heading for the match, they're letting 2000 in, its a 12 30 KO. Watched it on Sky via Now TV. We won 2 0. They had a player sent off for stopping a goal with his hand after about 20 mins. Joao scored the penalty. Morrison got the second. Started painting the utility room after finishing the prep. Had the society walk on Sunday around Warren Row starting at Knowl Hill. Really good walk, as is traditional for the December walk we stopped for mince pies and drinks. We split into 2 groups of 6. Hilary took her dog Lola.Finished off painting the walls in the utility room apart from a bit of touching up. Cooked a curry.
