A trip to Cornwall - Sunday November 26th 2023

We went to see Andy on Monday. He's going home on Saturday and walked us to the door on crutches when we left. Unfortunately M was violently sick and had a bottom problem during quiz night. No idea why. She started off sleeping downstairs just in case but woke up in the night and was OK so moved upstairs. Lazyish day on Tuesday, took Owen into town. Drove down to Cornwall on Wednesday. Staying at the Norway Inn in Perranarworthal. Nice pub good meal. On Wednesday M went to visit a member of the Vachel family to photo stuff from the archives she has. This was the purpose of our visit to Cornwall. She lives in St Mawes so we went via the King Harry chain ferry.  I did a walk round St Mawes.Good start to the evening, finished the crossword and had a couple of pints and meal back at the ranch. On Friday we went to look at a property in The Valley where we are thinking of buying a holiday home. Nice place. Good journey back. Good break. Good news on Saturday, Andy made it home.
URZ won away at Wycombe. James and Amy went to LSB for a wedding anniversary dinner so we looked after the kids. Tony came round for guitar practice on Sunday. James made pizzas.

Another family get together - Sunday 19th November 2023

SET came over on Monday so we had a family trip out to Dinton Pastures where Edith had her first go on a swing and we all enjoyed the big swing. This was followed by a 5 layer lasagne back at ours.
Madeline didn't want to go to  nursery on Tuesday but was more or less OK when she got there. Owen had his first set of jabs and was fine with it all (apart from the jabs themselves). Madeline didn't want to got to nursery on Wednesday but really enjoyed her day. We took Owen out for a walk in the morning. I did a quick ride down the Kennet in the afternoon. There was quite a bit of flooding out that way but I got through it.
Madeline was more or less OK at nursery on Thursday. We picked her up. I did my ride out to Swallowfield on Friday, its about 22 miles. Didn't do much on Saturday. Created a Tiktok account and uploaded a couple of videos Pic and Cracking Up James made pizzas. Had a bit of a relapse with the cold overnight. Went to Coley Park with Madeline and James on Sunday morning and took Owen into town in the afternoon. M cooked slow roast lamb.

Succumbed to cold - Sunday November 12th 2023

Did a ride out to Sonning, up through Dunsden and back through Caversham on Monday. It was Madeline's first day at nursery on Tuesday. She was a bit overwhelmed but it went reasonably well. I cycled along the Kennet and back through Theale. Went to watch URZs with Ralph in the evening. We drew 1 1 with Bristol Rovers. No beer so had to drink cider. Madeline's second day at nursery on Wednesday didn't go so well. She was upset when Amy dropped her off and picked her up. I cycled along the Warren and back via Kidmore End but got a puncture unfortunately. Went to the Hop Leaf with Kevin, Adrienne and Penno. I succumbed to the cold on Thursday as a result our trips to see Andy and Brian and Karen were cancelled. Took Owen into town with M. Madeline had a much better day at nursery on Thursday. She was upset when she was dropped off but otherwise fine. Took Madeline to softplay on Friday at Palmer Park whilst James and Amy checked out the area. Took Madeline to the museum on Saturday. Was feeling a bit better so went for a ride in the afternoon out Hardwick Stud way. Got another puncture this time on my mountain bike. Created some QR codes. James did excellent pizzas in the evening. Had a bit of a relapse on Sunday coldwise. Maybe the bike ride wasn't such a good idea. Amy cooked a fine salmon stir fry.

And then there were 6 - Sunday November 5th 2023.

On Monday Madeline went to her new nursery for the first time. James and Amy stayed with her and she enjoyed it. We moved the stuff we had boxed up into Lok n Store so the house is a lot less cluttered. Madeline and Owen both had colds so they took them to the doctors but everything OK. M also has a cold so had a bad night. On Tuesday Madeline had an hour in the nursery by herself. She didn't want James and Amy to leave but when they went to pick her up she was OK. I did my 5 hills ride. The first time on the bike for a while. Got the rocking horse my dad made down from the loft. Madeline was in nursery for an hour and a half on Wednesday. Same reaction as before. M went for her covid and flu jabs. Vicki and Isla I came round. I went for a ride on my mountain bike down the Kennet and got wet and muddy. Me and James took Madeline to softplay at Palmer Park on Thursday. Amy introduced me to a new lunch. The fried cheese toastie. Madeline went to nursery for 2 hours in the afternoon. Amy made pulled pork. Madeline's belated birthday present arrived which was a balance bike. On Friday Amy took Owen back to the doctors as he had got a bit worse. In the mean time me and James took Madeline to Prospect Park. When we got back Amy phoned to say the doctors wanted Owen to be taken to childrens AnE to be checked out. Then she phoned back to say they were sending him by ambulance as they would have Oxygen on hand if needed. The diagnosis was he had bronchiolitis. A common chest infection in babies. It is caused by a viral infection, usually the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) which he tested positive for. There is no treatment and recovery normally takes 5 days but the cough can linger. They decided to keep him (and Amy) in overnight though as a precaution and so oxygen would be at hand. On Saturday morning James went in to keep Amy company and we took Madeline to softplay at Palmer Park. We also took her bike. They were discharged at lunchtime. James made pizzas using his pizza steel and dough that had been made on Thursday night and kept in the fridge. Very good except the oven kept cutting out  presumably because it was too hot. Its happened before. I didn't go but URZ beat MK Dons in the FA cup. They are now drawn away to the mighty Eastleigh. Did the society walk on Sunday but M wasn't up for it so I didn't stay for lunch made a curry instead.

The Move From Glasgow - Sunday October 29th 2023

On Monday took Madeline to a new nursery with James. The one she is in is closing which doesn't make them feel so bad about moving her to a new one in Reading. On Tuesday took Owen for a walk and spotted the playground was also closed.
Wednesday was a big day. The move to Reading. M, Amy, Madeline and Owen by  train, me and James driving. The train they were due to get was cancelled along with seat reservations but they managed to upgrade to Standard Premium. More trouble later and moved on to a train with no seats so upgraded to first class. Removal people turned up at 8am and it all went relatively smoothly. We left at 4pm and got back just after midnight. On Thursday the removal men turned up at 8 30 am to put the stuff in Lok n Store. Took Madeline to the swings on Friday. They went to Josh and Vic's in the afternoon. In the evening I met up with Chris Gavin to see The Dead South at The  Roundhouse. I'd been looking forward to it as they were recommended by Ian and Roy but ended up being disappointed with the sound. Too much bass, muddy vocals and quite often couldn't hear the other instruments. Good night though. SET came over on Saturday so we had all 3 generations together for the first time. Had a chicken roast dinner and leftover pie on Sunday. Me and M took Madeline to softplay at Rivermead. It was very busy and she coped really well.

Up To Glasgow - Sunday October 22nd 2023

Spent most of Monday deep ckeaning the kitchen. Managed to get volunteer soundies for all the remaining October RSAC events. First AFD for a while. Heard an owl about 6 30 on Tuesday morning. Went for my covid and flu jabs then went to see Andy. Got the train to Glasgow on Wednesday morning. We met Owen in person for the first time.
And picked Madeline up from nursery.
Had chicken tikka masala from the Shish Mahal. Took Madeline  to nursery on Thursday then looked after Owen.
Took Madeline to the Kelvingrove Art Gallery on Friday. It was very windy. We went to the botonicals on Saturday morning past the penguins we hadn't noticed before. There are some killer plants in there.
Took Madeline to the park in the afternoon with James. Watched England lose to South Africa in the rugby world cup semi final by 1 point.
They were a bit unlucky. On Sunday JAM went to visit some friends so I did a bit of a walk whilst M did a bit of packing for them.
Found out Tom's company, Fantastic, has folded so he has unfortunately been made redundant. Owen had a nap.

Nice - Sunday October 15th 2023

Went to see Andy on Monday. He had had a family trip out to Newbury at the weekend and there are a couple more trips planned so our trip obviously sparked things off. He's now walking with a frame, can stand for 10 seconds and his hands are getting better. On Tuesday flew out to Nice. All very straightforward. Met up with Tom, Sally and Edith (SET) for a great meal in the old town at Chez Palmyre. One of those formulas the French do so well.

Went back to their place afterwards and admired Edith's rolling.

On Wednesday had a bit of a wander in the morning followed by a spot of lunch then out to a beach on the bus. Had my first dip in the sea since 2017 I think.

Public transport is pretty good. Tram from the airport, bus out to the beach, all very modern and quite joined up ticket wise. Quite a few cycle lanes too. The ride to the beach was just like being on the French Riviera. Tom cooked some pasta in the evening. On Thursday went up the big hill.

Then a really nice lunch at a more upmarket restaurant in the old town called Olive & Artichaut. Did a bit more wandering after. We are staying right next to the harbour.

There were quite a few expensive looking yachts like the one in the background. It's called the Kaiser and can be hired for €550,000 a week. Went to watch the sunset which is a bit of an event.

Snacked and played cards chez SET afterwards. Flew back on Friday morning.

Great place, great weather, great little break. Watched the rugby world cup quarter finals on Saturday and Sunday. Wales, Ireland and France out but England through.
